From Alexandria to Leadership in the NYPD

Egyptian-American police officer Mariana G. Zakhary has reached a significant new milestone in her career with her promotion to Captain in the New York City Police Department (NYPD), marking the latest chapter in a law-enforcement career spanning nearly 18 years.
The promotion comes as part of NYPD’s promotion ceremonies at One Police Plaza (1PP) and has drawn considerable attention within New York’s Egyptian and Coptic communities, where Zakhary’s achievement has been widely celebrated as a historic milestone for an Egyptian-American woman in the department.
Current records list Captain Mariana Zakhary as serving with Patrol Borough Manhattan South as of September 2026, following years of service in several NYPD commands and specialized units.
The rank of Captain is a senior leadership position within the New York City Police Department (NYPD), ranking directly above Lieutenant and below Deputy Inspector. According to official NYPD guidelines, Captains hold significant command and supervisory responsibilities and may lead a police precinct or oversee specialized units and operations, making the promotion an important milestone in an NYPD career.
A Journey That Began in Alexandria:
Behind the Captain’s badge is an Egyptian story that began thousands of miles away from New York.
Mariana Zakhary was born in Alexandria, Egypt, where she spent her early childhood and completed elementary school before her family immigrated to the United States.
She was only 11 years old when she arrived in New York with her family.
There, she continued her middle school, high school and university education before earning a master’s degree in political science, according to an earlier interview in which Zakhary recounted her life and career.
From Academia to Law Enforcement:
Zakhary’s path to the NYPD was anything but conventional.
She has spoken about a childhood fascination with reading, particularly stories involving police work, criminal investigations and major cases.
Before entering law enforcement, Zakhary said she taught at Brooklyn College, later had an opportunity to teach at the Police Academy, and also spent eight months in France on a scholarship.
She eventually made the life-changing decision to leave the academic path and pursue a career in law enforcement.
The transition required demanding physical training, examinations and extensive study of the law. Zakhary has credited self-discipline, hard work and a deep commitment to her profession as central factors in her advancement.
An NYPD Career Beginning in 2008:
Records indicate that Zakhary’s NYPD service began in January 2008, putting her career at nearly 18 years by the time of her promotion to Captain in September 2026.
Over the years, she has served in multiple NYPD commands and units, including the 63rd Precinct, 68th Precinct, Patrol Borough Brooklyn South Impact Response Team, Uniformed Promotions Training Unit and Family Assistance Section, before her current assignment with Patrol Borough Manhattan South.

When Arabic Became a Professional Strength:
One of the most compelling aspects of Zakhary’s story is that the language she brought with her from Egypt eventually became an asset in her American law-enforcement career.
Zakhary has said that her fluency in Arabic proved valuable in her police and investigative work, helping her during important investigations.
She has also spoken about her involvement in complex investigations, including cases involving money laundering and international organized crime, and about how her investigative work contributed to her professional advancement.
The language and cultural identity the 11-year-old girl carried from Alexandria had become professional strengths for the NYPD officer she would later become.
Remaining Connected to Her Egyptian Roots:
Despite building her career in the United States, Zakhary has maintained a strong connection to her Egyptian roots.
She has spoken publicly about visiting Egypt and about the values she learned from her parents dedication to work, discipline, a love of reading, helping others and love of country.
She has also remained active within the Egyptian community and has encouraged younger generations of Egyptian and Arab Americans to explore opportunities in law enforcement.

Turning a Vision Into an Organization:
In 2017, Zakhary began pursuing a vision to create an organization bringing together Coptic Americans working in law enforcement.
That vision ultimately became the Coptic American Law Enforcement Organization (Coptic LEO).
According to the organization’s official website, the idea was planted in 2017 through Zakhary’s vision and developed over several years of community engagement and collaboration with law-enforcement partners. Zakhary serves as the organization’s Founder and President.
Its mission extends beyond professional networking…
The organization works to promote Egyptian heritage, strengthen communication between Egyptians and law-enforcement and city agencies, support NYPD recruitment efforts, provide scholarships and youth programs, and participate in community service initiatives.
In March 2025, the organization, under Zakhary’s leadership, participated in a young women’s seminar organized by the Coptic Orthodox Diocese of Pennsylvania and its Affiliated Regions, reflecting its outreach to younger generations.
Recognition for Community Leadership:
Zakhary’s community leadership has also received formal recognition.
At the organization’s annual celebration on Staten Island in January 2024, attended by NYPD executives, law-enforcement representatives and Egyptian community leaders, Zakhary and the organization received a New York State Assembly citation recognizing her community service and leadership.
Her story, therefore, extends beyond advancement through police ranks. It also reflects an effort to use her experience and position to strengthen communication between law enforcement and the community she came from.
The distance between Alexandria and New York can be measured in miles. Mariana Zakhary’s journey between the two is better measured in years of education, discipline, service and persistence.
She arrived in America as an 11-year-old Egyptian girl, completed her education, earned a master’s degree, entered academia and then made the difficult decision to pursue law enforcement.
Her NYPD career began in January 2008 and took her through police work, investigations, leadership responsibilities and community service before reaching the rank of Captain in September 2026.
At the same time, she remained connected to her Egyptian and Coptic roots and created an organization intended to build bridges and open doors for the generations coming after her.
Today, the Captain’s badge represents more than another promotion in Mariana Zakhary’s career.
It marks a new chapter in an Egyptian-American journey that began with an 11-year-old girl leaving Alexandria and ultimately led to a leadership rank in the New York City Police Department.
